Position Paper

A position paper is a paper that is written by a person or a business.anyone that wants to take a position on a subject. If there are any controversial issues or anything, you can write a position paper to let the public know where you stand.

People like position papers because they like to know exactly where you stand. If there is a business that they trust, they want to know if the business will stand for good values when good values come into question.

Writing position papers can earn you expert status. This is very important in businesses that want people to trust them. If you have expert status then people may start to look at you as sort of an opinion leader. They would see you as someone whose opinion they could trust and respect.

If you had expert status then people would trust you because they would know that you are someone who knows what they are talking about. It is not as if a professional golfer is trying to write a paper on trimming trees. That you could not trust. But it is as if a professional golfer were writing a paper on golfing. People would read it.

Opinion Leader

In order for a business to do well they need great publicity. If they do not have good publicity they will not be able to do well as a business. Their success depends on the public's opinion of them mainly.

If the public does not think well of them then there will not be anyone who wants to buy their products. If there is not anyone who wants to buy their products then the business will not stay a business.

The business runs because it manufactures something and that something is bought by the public. The money that they earn off of it can then go towards making other products and selling those.

So it is apparent how important publicity is to a business. There are many ways for a business to get publicity. One major way is for them to pitch stories to editors and reporters and also to develop relationships with them.

Op Ed

An op ed is an "op-inion ed-itorial" or sometimes it is called an "op-posite ed-itorial." It would be called an opposite editorial because it is usually located on the page opposite the editorial page in a newspaper.

People who are expressing personal viewpoints and opinions on different subjects write these editorials. They are usually written by guest authors or staff members of the paper and have a greater length than normal editorials.

There is not a lot of editing that goes into them because of their personal and opinionated nature. The people writing these articles could be considered experts in their fields. They are people who might be looked at as opinion leaders. People that the public look up to and value for their opinions on different subjects.

Localizing News Stories

There are always different things happening. Every night the news is packed with new stories and new information. Reporters are busy publishing all these stories that they hear. Current world events are constant.

For reporters it probably does not sound to difficult to find new stories to write about. Things are happening constantly. It is true that it would not be hard.if you were writing about the world or the nation. Even the state. It is hard for reporters to find things to write in the paper daily about local news.

Within a city there is not as much that goes on and so big things do not happen too often. It is hard for reporters to always try and find new things to publish in local news. Because it is hard, reporters will a lot of times just publish fluff.

They will publish things that are not significant and that have no real meaning because they have nothing else to publish. Nothing new happened so they will write about the park or about the biggest garage sale ever. They just need new stories.

Human Interest

One type of story that is always bound to get published in newspapers and other media is the story that has to do with human interest. These types of stories make people feel good and they interest people. They can boost the ratings of different publications and stations.

On group that has an easier time getting stories published because they mainly publish these human interest stories is the non-profit group, or groups. These groups are working to help people and so they usually have a lot of human-interest stories.

Non-profits will contact radio stations and TV stations with human-interest stories in hopes for some good publicity about their organization. It is usually not to hard for them because editors and reporters are always looking for good human-interest stories.

While some stories may get boring and may make people start to lose interest in the newspaper, radio or other media, human-interest stories are always a good idea and are always successful at making listeners, viewers and readers happy. They keep them interested.

Following up After Sending a Press Release

In order for a business to run they need publicity so that people will come to them and buy their products. If they do not have good publicity then it will be very hard for them to be successful and they may not stay open very long.

One way that many businesses get publicity is through pitching stories and press releases. They send their information into a reporter or editor and the reporter or editor decides whether or not he or she wants to use it.

If they do, you are in luck because then your business will appear in the paper and you will get some good publicity. If they do not then you have to try to find other ways of getting good publicity or you may have to just keep trying until your story gets accepted.

Fillers

Businesses and people that are trying to sell something and keep selling something have to have good publicity and they work hard to get publicity. Without good publicity and customers they would not be able to exist.

Publicity allows people to know who they are and then those people want to come buy what they have. But if businesses do not have good publicity or people to buy their stuff they might as well just shut down.

One way that these people try to get good publicity is by pitching their stories to editors and reporters and developing relationships with these reporters. If reporters will accept their articles then that is a good way to get publicity.

Features

When businesses strive for good publicity they are trying to sell themselves to the public. They want the public to be so interested that they want to buy the company's products. They are trying to get the public to build confidence in them as a business.

The main way that businesses get good publicity is by advertising. People see ads and they tend to want what they see. Especially if the business does a good job at portraying their products.

Probably everyone has heard or seen a little girl who is watching TV and sees the newest and greatest Barbie dream doll tell her parents that the Barbie is what she wants for Christmas. Even if it is a year in advance.

They see it on TV and they see all of the neat things it does and they want it so bad. It is like it is the only thing that matters in the world. Advertisements do not quite have this effect on adults but they do still affect them.

Exercise Bikes

For many people exercise is hard for them because they feel they are too busy. They may have tried getting a gym pass, but they just cannot find the time to make it to the gym. Maybe they tried running, but that was hard to find time to do also.

These people know that being fit is important for your health but they do not know how to fit exercise into their buy lives. There is so much to do that they forget to make exercise one of those much things to do.

First they could try looking through their list of things to do and see if there is anything that they could eliminate out of their schedule. They could try clearing a space where they could exercise.

Campaigns

When it comes to public relations and getting good publicity, many businesses will go on publicity campaigns. It just means that they are going to start doing a lot of advertising and such so that people will hear their name and get familiar with them.

Many businesses will hire a media coach or a publicist to run their campaign. It is a lot easier if you have someone that is trained in publicity help you to get publicity. A media coach or publicist could help you know what would be best to do and how would be best to advertise so that you can get the best publicity possible.

For some businesses it may be best to advertise one way one for others it may be best to advertise a different way. A media coach would be a great person to help you with that and tell you what you should do.

They would be able to guide the campaign and watch it to see how well it was doing. It just might be a good idea if you are going to campaign, to get a publicist or a media coach. If you think you can do it yourself that is fine, but it is just something you may want to ponder.

Bacon's

For businesses to run they need publicity. They need to contact reporters and editors and they need to try and get articles published about them. They need to pitch their stories in such a way that editors will want to make them a part of their publications.

For businesses publicity is like gasoline is for a car. Without gasoline even the nicest car cannot run. It may have all the best features and be top of the line quality, but with out fuel all of that is quite useless except to be looked at.

With businesses, they may be the greatest and produce the best stuff, but with out publicity there is no point. If people do not know who they are they will not buy their stuff and the business will not be able to run. People have to buy their stuff or else they will just go into deep dept. They will have no money to support themselves.

Backgrounders

Reporters have a big job. They have to find interesting stories to publish, stay updated on current events, read all the stories people pitch to them, decide which stories to accept etc, etc. There is a lot that they are involved in because of their job.

They are so busy it is a wonder how they are able to do their jobs so well, most of the time. One big thing that they have to handle is people's stories that are pitched to them. There are many, many people that want publicity and so they will try to get their stories published.

It is a difficult job for reporters to have to read through all their stories and decide which to send. A lot of times they do not even read through them all. If there is not an interesting headline on someone's story, the reporter will not want it because he does not think it would be worth his while to read.

When they do get good stories then they have to find a way to work them into their publication. A lot of times they will have to research the topics and such so that they can produce a good article. If they did not it probably would not be too good.

Associated Press Stylebook

The Associated Press Stylebook is a usage and guidebook for most newspapers and magazines. It has many guidelines in it for these publications that they follow for their editing, grammar, punctuation and such.

This book has grammar, punctuation and spelling guidelines. It has rules that newspaper and magazines follow so that they are the same. Rules such as when to capitalize and how to use punctuation.

For example, they do not use commas before "ands" such as: Bill, Molly, and Susan went to the store. They would say: Bill, Molly and Susan went to the store, with not comma after Molly.

Public Service Announcements

Public service announcements could be a way to get publicity for your business or non-profit organization. It would be a lot easier for a non-profit organization to get publicity off of a public service announcement because you are not really supposed to use them as an add, but there are ways the people have found to get publicity for their business.

You may wonder why businesses would not just advertise on radio or TV without going on public service announcements. After all, if it is so tricky to advertise on a public service announcement, what is the point?

A public service announcement is a spot that airs for free on public radio while for other ads and such you would have to pay. For smaller companies this would be great because they may not have the money to pay for a spot to advertise themselves.

Non-profit Public Relations

Non-profits have to go about their public relations in different ways then normal businesses. Because they are non-profit they do not have the funds for advertising so they have to make themselves known in other ways.

Normal businesses can take their profits and budget them for advertising and other needs but non-profits cannot. They have to go about it in different ways. One way is to make sure that everyone working in the organization understands the organization's mission.

If everyone there knows what they are about and it excited to do their part then the things they do will be a lot more effective. It will also make all the "employees" so excited that they will want to share it with the people they meet. In this small way they can spread it by the word of mouth.

Once a few people spread it to a few people who spread to a few more people, that is a lot of people who now are aware of the business just because people are talking about it and doing things to help.

Media Directories

Many businesses and people (such as authors) work very hard at getting good publicity. Publicity is a key to their success. Without good publicity businesses could not run and people could not sell their products.

The only reason they exist is because they have people to buy their products. They have consumers who consume what they have. If businesses do not have good publicity these consumers would not want their products and their business would not be able to run.

One way, and important way, for all these people to get good publicity is by fishing for it. They have to contact reporters and pitch their stories in a way that would interest them so that they will get published.

By developing relationships with the reporters businesses and such gain their trust and can be more confident that the reporters will publish good things about them. The more people they can get to publish good things about them the more people they will get to buy their products.

International Public Relations

For businesses everywhere there is one thing that is necessary for all of them to have in order for them to be successful and that is publicity. They have to have good relations with the public or else they will fail.

In order for them to be successful they have to have consumers and those consumers are the public. If the public is not interested in them then they will no be able to run. They will not have the funds to keep themselves going. They will have to pay for their products and their building and everything and if they do not have any money to do that then they will not be able to stay up and running.

Some businesses are small and only focus on getting publicity amongst the local public. Some are a little bigger and will spread throughout the nation. But others are even bigger and will spread throughout the world such as Wal-Mart and McDonald's.

Editors

If you are trying to get something published you have to always have the editor foremost in your mind. No matter how important you think you story is, no matter how badly you want it to get published, none of it matters if the editor does not want to publish your story.

Even if you think your story will change the world, you have to go about getting it published in a way that best suits the editor. Not yourself. If you barge into his office and tell him to publish your story because it will change the world, he probably will not listen to you. He has too many other stories and things to think about.

One thing you should do before you even pitch your story is contact the editor and see if he would be interested in your story. If he is too busy with other things then it is not a likely chance that he would really look at your article. But if you contact him and find that he is not too busy and that he would like to see your story, it is better for you.

By-Line

A by-line is the line at the head of a column or article that tells you the writer's name. They are not on the tops of all articles, just things such as columns and such where the author is the regular author each day or week.

By-line articles are not as strict about what are in them. They are mostly opinions and such from the author. The author writes about things he or she is interested in and on their opinions of world events and such.

If the author is someone seeking good publicity this is great. If they have a good article it would draw people to their website if they had one. It would get people interested in them.

For businesses and such that would want to be published in an article of the sort they could use the authors name to look him or her up in a media directory so that they could pitch their stories and eventually develop a relationship with the reporter.

Crisis Plan

A crisis plan is a planned, organized arrangement that an organization creates on how to deal with a certain crisis, particularly when communicating with the media. Crisis communication, or a crisis communication plan, is the term used to describe the interaction with the media during and after a crisis. The crisis plan is usually created by the public relations team of an organization.

There are many different events that can happen within an organization that can qualify as a crisis. It is important that an organization is prepared ahead of time for each possible crisis with a crisis plan. There are some types of crises that aren't worth preparing for, however, due to the unlikelihood that it will ever happen (such as the executive team being abducted by aliens) or because an outrageous amount of time and work is needed in order to be fully prepared.

Crisis Management

What is crisis management?
Crisis management is a professional approach to handling the crises that come up with organizations and people who are often in the public eye. Crisis management is one of the special realms of the art of public relations. Public relations consultants are trained in the arts of crisis management. A "crisis" is a negative event. A "crisis" is when something bad, unwanted, or terrible happens. If an oil tanker crashes in the pacific ocean and sends thousands and thousands of gallons of oil roiling out to sea, the company that owns the oil tanker is going to need some crisis management, and is going to need it fast. If a politician is accused of taking bribes, he or she will require crisis management. If a famous movie star has been caught making racist comments on camera, you can bet that a crisis management team will be brought in immediately.
Be more specific about example in which crisis management might be needed.
