Big fish, small pond

The size of your public relations department is going to dictate many aspects of your job. When you are job hunting, you might consider if you feel more comfortable as a big fish in a small pond or a big fish in a big pond.

Small companies may want a public relations person to do everything. This "one-man-band" kind of a position suits some people. In other companies, you might be a cog in the public relations wheel. Try to determine your strengths and your professional style in this regard when doing your job search. If you specialize in doing research and you love research methods, maybe you will want to find a large pond where there are other people doing the journalism and taking care of the networking aspects of the job. If you are the kind of person who likes variety, maybe you will be better off in a job where you can be a one-man-band.
