So you are a small business or just someone who wants to get a little bit of publicity for something or other. You are having a very hard time with it because you just do not know what you do in order to get the publicity that you are looking for. So what do you do?
One option would be to become columnist. A columnist is someone who publishes his or her own column in a newspaper or magazine. It is a regular thing and is their own place in a newspaper to daily express opinions and views and such.
Columns are a great was to obtain expert status. If you have a column that people read regularly and you are knowledgeable about the things you talk about and you make them easy for people to understand, they will come to view you as and expert in your field.
If they view you as an expert they will trust you and will be willing to take part in whatever you do. If you publish a book, they are more likely to buy the book. If you run a business, they are more likely to want to be your customer. If they feel that they can trust you than they will trust your products.
If you were to gain people's trust by proving you are an expert, it would also help you to create a market. Your clientele would expand and you would have a much greater expansion of people to launch your products to.
Besides this, becoming a columnist would also be a great way for the company spokesperson to speak for the company. It is something that would be read regularly and if you had a great spokesperson, he or she would be able to get your views and opinions out in a way that will excite and interest people. It would make people want to come to you and find out more about your business.
Some people have a hard time with columns because you always have to be coming up with new and interesting things to say. Everyday you have to publish something that will keep your readers interested in you and your column.
Some columnists find this a difficult task. So if you are a business where your spokesperson is very busy and is always handling media inquires and developing relationships with reporters, it may not be best for him or her to be a columnist simply because they probably would not have time to develop something interesting and new everyday.
A column is not meant to advertise your company so if you include things about your company so that people will become familiar with your name and be interested in what you do, you have to include it into the flow of your column without making it seem like an advertisement.
If you are a business that is doing pretty well you will want to try and be on the good side of other columnists in newspapers and magazines. Especially prominent columnists. If a respected columnist does not like you and does not like your business, they can do a lot to damage you. If people like them and read the often, their view of your and your company will be greatly affected.
So besides helping your own public relations by having your own column, you also want to help your own public relations by being friends with columnists. Your company spokesperson would help out a lot on this area.
If your spokesperson can develop relationships with these people, they are more likely to publish good stuff about you if the opportunity ever arises.
