Keep your foot out of your mouth

Part of knowing what to say is knowing what not to say. If you are in public relations, it is important that you never say anything that will offend anybody. You don't even want to say anything that might be misconstrued as offensive.

One of the most dangerous areas in relations today is race. If you can avoid it, you should just not talk about race, or mention race for any reason. It is too sensitive of a subject; mentioning race can only get you in trouble. As long as you are keeping your foot out of your mouth by not mentioning race, you might as well leave religion and politics alone as well. Leave the political time bombs out of your communications and then years later you won't have to defend the things you said today. In the areas of race, politics and religion, things that are acceptable today may be taboo tomorrow.
