Localizing News Stories
There are always different things happening. Every night the news is packed with new stories and new information. Reporters are busy publishing all these stories that they hear. Current world events are constant.
For reporters it probably does not sound to difficult to find new stories to write about. Things are happening constantly. It is true that it would not be hard.if you were writing about the world or the nation. Even the state. It is hard for reporters to find things to write in the paper daily about local news.
Within a city there is not as much that goes on and so big things do not happen too often. It is hard for reporters to always try and find new things to publish in local news. Because it is hard, reporters will a lot of times just publish fluff.
They will publish things that are not significant and that have no real meaning because they have nothing else to publish. Nothing new happened so they will write about the park or about the biggest garage sale ever. They just need new stories.
One way for them to get ideas is to tie world events into local events. Anything small in the community that may have something to do with a big event in the world could be written about together.
For example, maybe some world news is that Wal-Mart is now located in every country around the globe. So you could tie that in to local news and write about your local town Wal-Mart and what is going on there.
You just have to tie them in and then it will become much easier to find things to write about that will not just be completely pointless and lame.
This dilemma of localizing news stories can be a great tool for local businesses if they will take it and use it wisely. Businesses are always trying to pitch good stories and press releases. They are always trying to develop good relationships with reporters. This just might be their chance.
What businesses could do is tie themselves in with world events, then pitch their stories. They are a lot more likely to get accepted if they can relate to the goings-on in the world. If they big stories of the time have to do with Iraq and they are trying to pitch stories that have to do with selling computer parts in Kentucky, they will not connect and will probably not get published.
But if businesses can help reporters out by giving them stories that connect to world events that are local, reporters are a lot more likely to pay attention and be interested in their stories. They have to receive stories that people will want to read because they have to do with the major things that are going on.
Instead of businesses pitching stories that have to do with selling computer parts in Kentucky they can pitch stories about selling computer parts in New York. They can tell how one of their employees was there on 9/11 and helped save some people when the towers were falling.
This would be a lot more likely to make the news. It has an interesting story that plucks at the heart, while also making mention of the local business. Both the reporter and the business would be satisfied. The reporter would get a good story and the business would get good publicity.
