News media

The news media is something that we all encounter every day. The news media is especially important for people who are involved in public relations. People who are in charge of publicity, of writing articles, sending our press releases, over their corporations image, and acting as a public relations representative need to be particularly aware of the news media and what it is. Knowing what the news media is is the next step to knowing how to work the news media to your publicity advantage.

The news media does exactly what its name says: the news media presents news. Because it is concerned with news, it is different than the entertainment media, the sports media, etc. There are several different parts of the news media, depending on the medium, or form, of communication. The most common news media outlets are:

1. print media-- print media consists of newspapers and magazines, both local and national. Some print media that has an even broader reader base would be publications like the New York Times, the Times, and the International Herald Tribune. There are broadly appealing magazines, like Time. However, magazines that have an even wider readership are ones that are geared towards a specific audience. Some examples of these would be cooking magazines, Wired, music magazines, Sports Illustrated, etc.

2. broadcast media-- broadcast media is made up things like TV stations, TV networks, and radio stations. Once again, these stations and networks can be both local and national. They can even appeal and cater to an international base, like the BBC. The BBC broadcasts its news programs and its radio programs mostly through public radio and public television stations. Public service stations also qualify as broadcast media.

3. Internet media --Internet-based media is becoming one of the most important news media outlets. It's also one of the most versatile and the most varied. Internet media can consist of your local newspapers or TV stations' web pages. However, don't forget web sites set up by companies, web sites set up by corporations, web sites set up by publicity firms, blogs, chat rooms, and all kinds of other internet options. Using the Internet news media is one of the best ways to publicize your company or your product to the widest- possible customer base.

4. journalists, editors, news anchors, etc.The term "news media" applies to and means not just the various outlets of the media-print, broadcast, and Internet-based, but also refers to the people who write the articles, deliver the news, and research the information.

While lots of people limit their interactions with the news media to only receiving information, lots of people use the news media to send that information. Knowing how to use the news media is the most important way to get publicity, especially free publicity, for your company and firm.

The most common way to start contact with the news media is through a press release. A press release is a communication that gives basic information announcing an event, a product release, etc. The press release is sent to editors at different news media outlets. Companies should also have a good press kit to give to reporters and editors, giving background information on the company, firm, band, etc.
