Newswire

What Is a Newswire?
A newswire is a wire service that electronically transmits up-to-date news to the media, government agencies, and occasionally the public. A newswire is typically a network of journalists or reporters that supplies information to a variety of media outlets, including magazines, television and radio broadcasters, internet news sites, and newspapers. There are many newswires throughout the world.
In some communist or authoritarian countries, such as China, the newswires are heavily controlled by the government.

How Do Newswires Work?
Typically, a newswire is comprised of journalists who will prepare stories and features and then sell them to other news organizations. Usually modifications are unnecessary or few, so the story can be printed virtually immediately. Other times, newswires form a network of newspapers that share their articles. There are also newswires that charge organizations to distribute their industry news.

Articles are distributed in bulk electronically, usually through the internet, to those who subscribe to the newswire. Newswires are not limited to journalists and newspapers; virtually anyone can subscribe to a newswire, from individuals to corporations to intelligence agencies.
Common Newswires

There are hundreds of newswires throughout the world. Some of the more common newswires are as follows:
Reuters. Reuters is one of the largest newswires in the world and sells its news, although the selling of articles only makes up about 10% of its annual income. Reuters dates back to 1850, when German Paul Reuter began using telegraphs to transmit news. The telegraph has more recently been replaced with the Internet. Reuters has a team of several thousand journalists that have covered virtually ever major event in the world.

AP. The Associated Press is the world's largest news organization. It is a cooperative that is actually owned by the newspapers and broadcast stations that contribute to it. These papers and stations both contribute and use articles in the newswire. Organizations can also subscribe to the AP, meaning for a fee they can access the articles but do not contribute to them. As the largest organization, 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio and television stations utilize the AP. The AP even has a style guide that serves to set the standard of journalistic writing.

PR Newswire. The PR Newswire is a commercial newswire service that charges various organizations for the right to distribute news in their database. Corporations, agencies, and organizations all use the PR Newswire to reach a large audience that is comprised of individuals, companies, the media, and government officials. The first commercial wire service of its kind, it was created in 1954 and is one of the largest commercial wire services today.

It also includes a global news service. Bloomberg has roughly 100,000 users in North America and another 130,000 throughout the world.
