Public Relations Issues
What Is a Public Relations Issue?
There are a number of events or circumstances that could require handling by someone experienced in public relations. A crisis or situation can occur at any time and any place to any organization, be it a school, business, community, or church. Public relations issues can take a number of forms, from violent crimes to scandals to damage from severe weather. When something like this occurs, the public, students, or employees are going to need to know what happened, so a crisis team or public relations specialist will step in.
When a public relations issue occurs, the main goal of the organization should be to help the company recover from an unfavorable situation by anticipating how it will respond to certain events and then knowing how to communicate with the press and the public about the crisis and what steps are being taken to remedy it. Ultimately, if done correctly, the company's integrity and reputation can be restored.
Business Public Relations Issues
In the business world, the most common types of public relations issues include the following:
- Financial. A financial crisis occurs when the company experiences a reduction in cash flow, files for bankruptcy, or has difficulty paying bills or making payroll.
- Public Relations. This type of crisis is anything that could negatively affect the image and reputation of the company. It could include a sex scandal, a crash involving an employee who was driving drunk, or a serious incident that resulted from human error.
School Public Relations Issues
A school faces a unique set of public relations issues. Such incidents a school should be prepared to deal with include:
- Death of a student, faculty or staff member, or immediate member of a student's family.
- Abuse allegations, both physical and sexual, against a teacher or staff member
- School violence, including gang fights, school shootings, and bomb threats.
Other Public Relations Issues
Certain events, such as those listed below, can occur to any type of organization, community, or company and will require intervention by a public relations specialist or team:
- Natural Disasters. Each area of the country has specific severe weather threats - hurricanes along the coasts, earthquakes in California, and tornados in the plains are just a few. These events become public relations issues as they can wreak havoc and completely destroy buildings and equipment and sometimes result in death.
- Bomb Threats. While bomb threats are not an everyday occurrence for most businesses and schools, they certainly do happen and are such an event that the public, parents, or members of the community should be kept aware of and updated on.
- Fires/Chemical Leaks/Spills. Some companies or laboratories deal with hazardous materials, so the threat of chemical leaks and spills or fires as a result is very real. In addition, fires can occur to any type of structure.
There are many types of public relations issues. In many cases, unless it is a highly publicized company or it is a large company that will be downsizing a large number of people, the crisis will be internal and most likely not involve the rest.
A public relations issue that involves injuries, deaths, or a scandal will probably require a more public response. In this case, companies or organizations will be dealing more with the media and the public. Such a crisis requires a quick response time in order to minimize rumors and the spread of negative publicity.
