Publicity Tips for Colleges

If you are putting on an event that is associated with a college function there are many facets that need to be paid attention to before you begin the event. There may be certain policies and procedures that may be unique to the college. Checking what guidelines that need to be followed is one of the first steps that you must take. Some examples of policies that may be enforced for a college campus may include.

1. Flyers to be posted on campus must be approved and stamped by the Student Activities Office. Save time and have this done before printing.
2. Locations available on campus for banner hanging. Banners will not be allowed everywhere so make sure you know exactly what is off limits.
3. Only post flyers in designated areas. Once again there will be places that are off limits.
4. Flyers may not be left on car windshields in parking lots.
5. Information will be available to you, but it is up to you to do the foot work.

Publicity is an essential part of any organization. Without the proper publicity, the organization's goals to raise money, to attract new members, or to provide a program or service will not be met. For your organization to have success it will take careful planning.

The most effective publicity allows the reader to understand all the facts of the program quickly. Promotional materials should have a clearly printed message that is designed to get a response from the viewer. They do not have to be extremely artistic, but your message should be clear to the reader.

There are certain areas of that you should focus on and taken into consideration before starting the publicity campaign. These areas include budget - know how much you can realistically spend, your audience - who are you targeting, information - make sure you are covering everything that is important, resources - what kinds will you use, location - where will you get the most exposure, and schedule - how much time do you have and when are the deadlines. Once you have covered these topics you are ready to begin your media campaign.

There are many different types of media to take advantage of during a media campaign. Word of mouth is probably the best source of positive publicity. When you get people talking about what you have to offer then the interest will spread The newspaper is another form of publicity. When utilizing the newspaper make sure that you contact the editor to get a list of guidelines such as deadlines and story length.

The next form of media coverage that should be considered as part of your publicity is the radio. The talk radio stations are always looking for interviews to fill their time slots. Public service announcements can also be an affect publicity tool if the event is a community event, however, public service announcements can not promote an event that is for profit.

There is also the publicity that you get from posters, flyers, banners, and displays. Some other ideas may be buttons, skits, stunts, bumper stickers, T-shirts, balloon, and door to door opportunities.

Now that you have a good idea of all that is associated with a good publicity event the next step is to roll up your sleeves and get busy. By following your campus policies and these few tips your event should be a success. These publicity tips hold true for a college event that you are planning but they are also a set of tips that will work with any publicity campaign that you may be involved in whether at school, work, or a charitable fund raiser.
