Publicity Tips for Politicians

It is important for politicians to use the publicity that they get from the media wisely. Politicians tend to get a lot of publicity from the media without asking for it. Some publicity that politicians get is not so positive while at other times the public actually gets to see them in a more positive light. The following are tips for politicians to assist them in using their publicity that they get from the media wisely.

When you are considering a media conference there are times when it may be more appropriate than others. Times when a media conference is useful is when an issue demands a two way conversation. If you want to give all media a fair opportunity to hear what you have to say a question and answer session is an opportune time for a media conference. When you are making a major announcement is another appropriate time for a media conference. When there is a complex issue and multiple media interviews can assist you in getting the issue out to the public. And of course when you have an announcement that is news worthy it is beneficial to hold a media conference.

Press briefings will provide you with opportunities to give background information on an issue or a subject. Press briefings should be simple and highly organized so that they can be completed in a short amount of time Some examples of press briefings are lunches, breakfasts, or round tables provide a setting to exchange ideas, a more intimate setting where you are meeting with just one person can be done over coffee or a meal this will help both parties learn more about each other. Inviting journalists to your office is a good way for them to feel part of your organization. If you are trying to build a rapport between yourself and the media, inviting them to a major event is a good way to start a working relationship. Where ever you hold your briefing make sure that you have something that is beneficial to say to the media.

A photo-call is appropriate when you have something that is visual that includes a human interest story or if it is news worthy. Timing is important when scheduling a photo-call, to ensure that you make it into the news you may want to schedule your photo-call when it is a light news day, at the beginning of the week, or in the late morning. Invitations should be made one week in advance and then a reminder the day before the event.

During your publicity events make sure that your reviewers, who have to sum up the event quickly, have a good seat where they have the best view and are able to hear well. It is also important to send a reviewer an advance copy of the program complete with notes and other important aspects of the event.

As with all your events it is vital that you be seen is a positive light. By applying some of these tips you will be in a better position with the media and therefore you may be shown in a more positive light to the public. As a politician you have many opportunities for publicity, make the most of the media's publicity by letting them know how you are assisting them while they are publicizing you. The media has a job to do and by making their job easier for them you will be in turn making you job easier for you by getting the positive publicity that you need, want, and deserve.
