Spin
A spin could mean two different things. The first thing a spin could be is a biased portrayal of events in a person's own favor. They may be deceptive and manipulative to get what they want from the world and such.
There are people called spin-doctors that are hired to go about and try to shape peoples perceptions of political parties and such. They try to twist people's thinking to their way of thinking by using different tactics.
This is not good because if the party is trying to deceive people into thinking their way then it makes for unfair elections and such. It is true that everyone got to vote how they wanted, but they should be able to study things out for themselves and decide you would be the best person or party for office without people whispering the answer in their ears.
Another meaning of a spin would be when people choose carefully when to release certain news so that it can take advantage of big news events. This could be both good and bad.
It could be good if it was going to help your business get more publicity. Since you have to have publicity in order to run a business then it is important for you to have it. An example of spinning to help you get more publicity would thus:
Say your business is going to release news that you were going to build a giant golf course (that would be very odd, but just pretend). You do not want to release this news yet because you know that in a few weeks, Tiger Woods is coming to check it out (this would also be odd).
If you released the information now you would probably not get very good publicity. People might think it was odd and kind of give half their attention to it, but they would not give it as much as you would hope.
If you waited until Tiger Woods was actually coming, then you could get great publicity. You may not get good publicity for just building a golf course, buy you would get good publicity if Tiger Woods came to try out your golf course.
You would probably get on the news as well as newspapers and magazines. You would be everywhere. People would want to know who you are and why Tiger Woods would honor you with a visit. If they could not find the information by just reading the news, they would probably look you up.
With this mixed with multiplier effect you business would boom. You would get a ton of publicity that you would not have otherwise gotten. People would become familiar with your name real quick and you would get a lot of business.
A bad part of doing this would be if a company waited to release some news until a big event so that they news would be hidden under the much bigger events. For example, say that a company was doing something that they did not want the public to know about.
They might wait until a big even happened that had nothing to do with their news so that people would not be interested in it. They would be interested in the big event and would not give much thought to the much smaller pieces of news.
