The other kind of writing variance is in style. Different papers have different voices and you need your article to speak with a voice that matches that of the paper you are interested in. You might have a perfectly well written article that gets rejected because it just doesn't "feel" right to the editing staff. Make sure your article has the feel they are looking for.
