Write the way the writers write

Your job is so closely related to journalism that you might already have a degree in journalism. If you haven't studied journalism formally, start an informal study now. A lot of your job is going to be writing for the press.

In order to see that you do well, that your readers are happy, and that your article gets published, write the way the writers write. Different magazines and journals have different criteria for what content they will publish, you can ask for the stats on what they consider publishable material, this will include things like grade level and sentence length. The other kind of writing variance is in style. Different papers have different voices and you need your article to speak with a voice that matches that of the paper you are interested in. You might have a perfectly well written article that gets rejected because it just doesn't "feel" right to the editing staff. Make sure your article has the feel they are looking for.
